Beaufort County Health Department Finds Reward In Quality Improvement (QI) Project

As one of the four local health departments pilot testing the Area Health Education Center's (AHEC) QI 101 course, Beaufort County is leading the way in applying QI in public health. In starting this project, their aim was to improve health and wellness outcomes of mothers and infants in Beaufort County by promoting breastfeeding among Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) clients at the Beaufort County Health Department. Local Health Departments Complete QI 101 Course

people presenting information on flip chartFour local health departments (Beaufort, Buncombe, Craven, and Mecklenburg counties) recently completed the AHEC Quality Improvement 101 (QI 101) course, which is a 6-month action learning experience.   In early April, teams volunteered to pilot test the AHEC QI 101 course in order to provide feedback on how the NC Center for Public Health Quality could adapt the course for public health professionals. Collaborative Targets Public Health Nurse Mentoring Program

people at QI trainingThe NC Accreditation Learning Collaborative is working with the Central North Carolina Partnership for Public Health which includes: Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Guilford, Orange, Person, Rockingham, and Wake Counties. Health directors in the Central Partnership chose to focus on nurses’ abilities to deliver population-based services.  The specific target is to improve the retention of public health nurses through a mentoring program that includes orientation to working in a public health agency and training in population-based services. Launch of New Division of Public Health On Target (DOT) Team

In building upon the 2007 North Carolina State Pilot Accreditation process initiated by the Division of Public Health (DPH) and the Division of Environmental Health, the NC CPHQ has launched another DPH On Target (DOT) team.  The DOT team, as well as members of the Public Health Management Team (PHMT), underwent a Quality Improvement (QI) workshop on October 13th - 15th. Northeastern NC Partnership for Public Health Applies Lean Principles to Improve Public Health

"Lean is a win-win," stated Roxanne Holloman, Health Director for Beaufort County.  Along with Ms. Holloman, Annah Poteat-Godwin and Gene Smith from the Industrial Extension Service at NC State gave a presentation at the North Carolina Public Health Association (NCPHA) annual meeting to celebrate the successes of applying Lean methods in the Northeastern NC Partnership for Public Health agencies. Cabarrus and Cleveland counties pilot test TeamSTEPPS

TeamSTEPPS is an evidence-based teamwork system to improve communication and teamwork skills among health care professionals. The pilot teams will educate and coach staff within their local health agency to apply TeamSTEPPS tools.  In addition, teams will provide feedback on how to incorporate these tools into future QI training programs.

Northeastern partnership participates in Lean Health Care 200 

Representatives from local health agencies in the Northeastern partnership attended a two-day lean training course on July 30th.  The objectives of the training were to gain a deeper understanding of the basic lean tools and to learn how to sustain the use of these tools within their local agency.
